I'm opening my doors NEXT SUNDAY for my annual Open Studio and Seconds Sale. Please come by! I've made about 2000 pots in 2018 and this means that my seconds stash is extra good this year! Seconds are pieces with small flaws, experiments, class demos, and the pots I just don't want sitting around my studio anymore. They will be priced to sell, so you'll be getting some excellent deals and I'll be clearing space for the new year. I'll also be selling my usual work - pattern ware, rainbow ware, one of a kind mugs, and a nice selection of bowls, plates, and vases. Bring your friends and, as always, kids are welcome. Graffitea Bowls
There is a limited edition of one of a kind Graffitea Bowls done in collaboration with the Sticker Show and available only at the Fridge gallery. This exhibit is really worth seeing! HERE is a link to a great article by Brightest Young Things. 'Sticker artist and curator 'iwillnot' returns to The Fridge with the DC Street Sticker Expo 4.0 featuring the largest sticker combo wall in history as well as a series of select small and large-scale adhesive artworks from featured artists. Covering the entire gallery floor-to-ceiling (and then some), the combo wall will feature an estimated 200,000 stickers from nearly 1,000 artists based around the world. While artists based in the United States make up the largest contributing group, artists from nearly every continent in the world have sent in original street art stickers.'
I am drawn to the collaborative nature of graffiti, and I'm inspired by seeing the history of a wall in its layers while contemplating the ephemeral quality of each written name. The ‘Graffitea Bowl’ series is my way to write my name, so to speak, and to preserve an often temporary moment in a ceremonial lasting object – the teabowl. For this collaboration, I chose to reference Oribe ware pottery, which was developed and named in Japan by Lord Furuta Oribe in the early 1600s. Oribe was seeking to promote an “aesthetic of discord’ in ceramics by celebrating surface imperfections, shape distortions, and the irregular.
